CPSC requires Cablemod to recall 12VHPWR customized adapters, with a claim amount exceeding $74500
In 2022, after the release of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, there was an issue of overheating and melting of the 12VHPWR interface and its power supply line. Various parties also argued about the specific cause of the damage for a considerable period of time. Some manufacturers have launched 12VHPWR custom adapters to solve the problem of excessive pressure on cables caused by wire bending, resulting in abnormal temperature. Cablemod is one of them.
However, some users later reported that even if Cablemod products were used, there may still be burning issues. In addition to providing support to customers, Cablemod also apologizes and promises to replace the graphics card with a new one if it is their own product that caused the damage.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission of the United States has issued a recall notice on its official website, numbered "24-112", advising consumers to immediately stop using Cablemod's 12VHPWR custom adapter and contact the manufacturer for a full refund, shipping, and store points. According to statistics, Cablemod sold a total of 25300 12VHPWR custom adapters and received 272 reports of user issues, including looseness, overheating, and melting. The claim amount in the US region exceeded $74500, but there are currently no reports of casualties.
Many players believe that the potential issue with the 12VHPWR adapter may not be related to the manufacturer, but rather a design issue with the interface itself. PCI-SIG has brought a new connector design called "12V-2x6", which appears in the CEM 5.1 specification. Many power supply manufacturers have started selling products with the new design, which more or less indicates that the original connector has shortcomings in design.
