With the continuous progress of the times, electrical appliances will also be constantly updated, and auxiliary equipment will also be constantly changing. Below, we will have a detailed understanding of the differences between frequency converters and variable frequency power supplies.

What is a frequency converter?

Variable frequency drive (VFD) is a power control device that uses frequency conversion technology and microelectronics technology to control AC motors by changing the frequency of the motor's operating power supply.

The frequency converter mainly consists of rectification (AC to DC), filtering, inversion (DC to AC), braking unit, driving unit, detection unit, microprocessing unit, etc. The frequency converter adjusts the voltage and frequency of the output power supply by disconnecting the internal IGBT, providing the required power supply voltage according to the actual needs of the motor, thereby achieving energy conservation and speed regulation. In addition, the frequency converter also has many protection functions, such as overcurrent, overvoltage, overload protection, and so on.

What is a variable frequency power supply?

Variable frequency power supply is a system that converts AC power from the mains into pure sine waves through AC → DC → AC conversion. The output frequency and voltage can be adjusted within a certain range. It is different from the variable frequency speed controller used for motor speed regulation, as well as from ordinary AC stabilized power sources.

Variable frequency power supply is a general term in China, more accurately, it should be called AC power frequency converter, commonly referred to as AFC. The entire development history of variable frequency power supplies has basically evolved with the development of electronic devices.

The difference between frequency converters and variable frequency power supplies

Variable frequency power supply and frequency converter are two products with different purposes. Variable frequency power supply is a power supply that can achieve adjustable voltage and frequency, and the frequency converter is only used as a speed control device when the motor starts.

The output of the variable frequency power supply is a standard sine wave, and it is a multifunctional integrated device with variable frequency, voltage stabilization, frequency regulation, and voltage regulation. It can provide power for various electronic and electrical, mechanical manufacturing, laboratory testing, etc. The output voltage and frequency can be adjusted separately online.

The output voltage and frequency of the frequency converter cannot be adjusted, and the load can only be the motor. The output is a pulse square wave and cannot be used as a power supply. If there are control devices such as circuit boards, PLCs, and high-precision control hardware in the backend, there is a possibility of device breakdown.
